Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems are computer based mapping systems that allow for the creation, manipulation, and analysis of digital spatial data. With the advent of faster personal computes, GIS has moved to a mainstream technology incorporated into almost all levels of government, commercial, and academic institutions. GIS technology has a wide range of applications, spanning from municipal land use planning to determining where NASA sends Remote Operating Vehicles on Mars.

Geographic Information Systems technologies in the JCNERR are combined with remote sensing data to serve as the backbone for both the storage and analysis of scientific data within the JCNERR. [download pdf poster on GIS in the JCNERR 3mb]
